All claims for payment under the CJA may be subject to a CJA audit.

The Administrative Office of the United States Courts (AO) initiated an audit of CJA vouchers, which was conducted from July 2006 through October 2007. The scope of the audit included a review of vouchers submitted for payment in fiscal year 2005 by at least five panel attorneys and five interpreters who were among the individuals receiving the highest amount of CJA payments in each of 15 judicial districts visited. Payments were reviewed for a total of 85 panel attorneys and 85 interpreters. In general, the audit revealed the need to provide training and to enhance CJA payment processes and controls. The CJA Guidelines (Guide, Vol. 7, Part A) were revised to reflect many of the audit findings.
